The Menorcan "Avarca" is perhaps the most well known piece of footwear to come out of the Balearic Islands. In fact these sandals are loved in so many places, that in each they call them by a different name; albarcas, avarcas, menorcan, esparteñas, queras, mallorquinas, palowers ... an infinity of names! and it's hardly surprising! It is such a comfortable and versatile shoe that we can't help feeling proud these traditional sandals were born here.
This is our "Porc Negre" Collection. Why the name? The Black Pig or "porc negre" as we call it here, is our native pig, for whom we have great affection and so we named our collection of emblematic Pitiusa island footwear in its honour.
Our rustic model was inspired by the Menorcan fishermen’s shoes, which they used to make from a piece of recycled tyre and two pieces of leather sewn onto the upper and heel, for their usual summer footwear. We have done exactly the same thing!
One of the peculiarities of this model, is that few machines can sew them, so they have to be made by hand. They are perfect for the beach and can be put in the sea, provided you rinse them well after with plenty of fresh water to avoid cracking the leather.
To keep them in great condition, it is best to clean them with a cloth, soap and water and then moisturize them with a little cream or horse fat. We love our rustic sandals!
